Pass App, Local Online Ride-Hailing in Phnom Penh

You guys know Uber right? The ride hailing app that transforms the way we're using phones & transportation. In Indonesia, we have Gojek, similar with Uber but for motor bike taxi. You may knows Grab as well, Gojek's competitor.

Well, in Phnom Penh, I was surprised that they have similar app like Gojek. But specifically for Tuk-Tuk. Both kinds of tuk-tuks are available: the 3 wheeled tuk-tuk, perfect for maximum 3 persons if y'all slim enough, or the cart pulled motor tuk-tuk for more than 4 (sometimes locals abuse it until 8) persons.

The cart pulled motor tuk-tuk is KHR4.000 (or equal $1) per kilometer and the 3 wheeled tuk-tuk is KHR3.000 per kilometer (even cheaper!) I love to use this app whenever I'm in Cambodia. No hassle, no bargaining, just input your pick-up and drop off location, then they will come. You just pay the amount of price shown after the tuk-tuk drop you off. I usually use it when I need to go to the airport fast, or early in the morning.

From the city center, it cost me around KHR17.000 or equals to $4 plus KHR 1.000 or more. Not the cheapest option but the most comfortable way for me whenever I'm in Phnom Penh, or any main city in Cambodia, such as Siem Reap, Kep, Kampot and Sihanoukville.

I'm gonna show you how to use it. Bear in mind that this is not paid article, I do not know the people behind this app, I just wanna share it with you since this app really helps me A LOT when I'm in Cambodia.

Once you logged in to the app (just use your google acount) you'll see this interface. It will direct you to choose your current location for picking up. You may change the location by slide the pinpoint to any location you want on the map. Once you've decided your pick up location, clik set pick up button.

The app will change into this interface. You might choose your type of ride. The most populer ones are the 3 wheeled tuk-tuk and it's cheaper! The SUV type is new service. For me, I love the 3 wheeled Tuk-tuks.

Once you've choosed your ride, the app's interface will change like this. Now it's time to choose your destination.

Passapp interface 4

For the dropoff interface, it would be like this. First, it will show you your favorit destionations, if you've already used it (left image). But if you want to go to new destination, click "set location on map" and slide your finger to your new destination (center image). Or, if you already know the name of your destination (for instance, my destination is my hotel, i just input the name of the hotel in the search bar (right image). Once you've decided the destination, click "confirm dropoff" button.

Passapp interface 5

Now the interface would back like this. It will show you your pick up location name, dropoff location address, your preference payment method (I usually pay by cash), your type of ride (rickshaw or the 3 wheeled tuk-tuk) estimated cost and pickup time. Click confirm.

FYI, in cambodia, they accept two currencies : Cambodian Riel and US Dollar. Strange isn't it? Just bear in mind, that for most of the time, US$1 equals to KHR4.000. In my case above, it means my estimated price is KHR4.100 (rounded up) or US$1 and KHR100.

Once you've click the confirmation button, the interface will change like this. It will show your location around the map, and which driver available. If the driver's icon is green, means they are considering to take your order or not (left image). This might take awhile. Once the driver accepting your order, the icon will change into dark grey (right image). The app will tell you how long your waiting time too.

Once the driver has arrived, the app will let you know. You can see which one is your ride, by looking at the information shown in the app. It says Yellow with number P1923, means, just look at the yellow tuk-tuk. Then take a look in front of the tuk-tuk, they put their number there.

Once the driver confirm that they already picked you up, now, it's riding time! You can see your progress at the map, so if the driver's loosing their way, you can tell them. So far, all of my riders know how to read the map!

You can click the detail section to show the driver's informations. This might be useful when you're ordering and waitung for them.

Passapp interface 9

Once you've arrived, the app will tell you how much you should pay. Pay in dollar or riel, up to you. Then rate the driver, aaand it's finish!

Simple right? So far i've using this app in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, Kampot & Kep. But for the last three cities, there isn't much drivers available yet.

Enjoy your ride!
